Concrete for New Construction in the San Francisco Bay Area

From foundation slabs and garage pours to ADU flatwork and new home driveways — SDW Construction handles all structural and finish concrete for new builds across the Bay Area. On schedule, on budget, built to California code.

New Construction Concrete Contractor Serving the Bay Area Since 2001

Every new home, ADU, or commercial build in the Bay Area starts the same way — concrete in the ground. The foundation, garage slab, driveway, flatwork, and sidewalks are the bones of the entire project. Get that concrete right and everything built on top of it stands solid for decades. Rush it or cut corners, and you’re looking at expensive structural problems later.

SDW Construction (operating as S.D. White Construction) has been pouring new construction concrete across the San Francisco Bay Area since 2001. We work directly with homeowners, general contractors, and ADU builders. We’re on schedule, we communicate clearly, and we know exactly what Bay Area soils, seismic requirements, and building departments expect — because we’ve been doing this here, locally, for over 20 years.

Replace the placeholders below with real geo-tagged project photos — foundation pours, garage slabs, ADU flatwork, and new-home driveways perform well in search and convert well with visitors.

Important: These are general guidelines based on the California Residential Code. Your specific project requires a structural engineer’s drawings and local building department approval. Building departments in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and other Bay Area cities may have additional local amendments. Always follow the stamped plans — not a generic spec.

What Sets SDW Construction Apart

There’s no shortage of concrete contractors in the Bay Area. Here’s what makes working with SDW Construction different on new construction projects.

🗓 We Build On Time

On new construction projects, schedule isn't just a preference — it's critical. Every trade downstream depends on concrete being done when promised. We've built our reputation on meeting schedules, and we take that seriously on every job.

💰 We Build Within Budget

We provide detailed written estimates before any work begins and we stick to them. Change orders happen when the scope changes — not because we underestimated to win the job. No surprise invoices.

🚛 Best-in-Class Equipment

We carry everything needed for large-scale new construction in-house — trucks, concrete and shotcrete pumps, forms, compaction equipment, and finishing tools. We're not renting equipment to do your job.

👷 Our Own Trained Crew

We never subcontract your project to whoever's available. The crew that estimates your job is the crew that builds it. That continuity matters on complex new construction projects where site knowledge is critical.

Why Bay Area New Construction Requires Local Expertise

Building new concrete construction in the Bay Area comes with challenges that contractors from outside the region consistently underestimate. Soil conditions, seismic requirements, coastal exposure, and permitting realities vary significantly from city to city and neighborhood to neighborhood.

Expansive Clay Soils

Large areas of the East Bay — Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont, and the surrounding hills — sit on expansive Montmorillonite clay that swells when wet and contracts when dry. This movement is the leading cause of foundation cracking and slab settlement in the Bay Area. Our approach: deeper excavation, properly engineered compacted aggregate base, and reinforcement designed to accommodate seasonal soil movement rather than fight it.

Seismic Design Considerations

Bay Area new construction must account for seismic loads — particularly for foundations, retaining walls, and any structure over fill or on hillside lots. We use steel rebar reinforcement on all structural concrete, design slab thickness and joint placement based on site-specific soil and load conditions, and coordinate with engineers and inspectors to ensure every pour meets local code requirements.

Permit & Inspection Coordination

New concrete construction almost always requires building permits in Bay Area cities, and inspection requirements vary significantly. In San Francisco, foundation work and structural concrete require DBI permits and multiple inspections. In Oakland, Marin, and Peninsula cities, requirements differ by project type and size. We’ve been navigating Bay Area building departments for over 20 years — we understand what’s required in each jurisdiction and we help coordinate the permitting process so your project doesn’t get delayed waiting on approvals.

Difficult Site Access

Many Bay Area properties — particularly hillside lots in Oakland, Marin, and San Francisco — present access challenges that require concrete pumping rather than direct chute delivery. Our in-house pumping capability means we can reach tight sites, hillside locations, and urban lots where other contractors can’t operate efficiently.

Our New Construction Process

Every new concrete construction project follows a clear, organized process — so you always know where things stand and what comes next.

Initial Contact

Call or Fill Out Our Estimate Form

Reach us by phone or through our online form. We'll gather basic project details — scope, location, timeline — and schedule a time for our estimator to visit your site.

2

Free Onsite Estimate

Project Scheduling & Permit Coordination

Once you approve the quote, we schedule the project around your timeline and coordinate any required permits and inspections with your local building department. We work with your general contractor's schedule when we're part of a larger project.

3

Scheduling

Excavation & Subgrade Work

We excavate to the required depth, clear all organic material, and address any soft or clay subgrade issues. On sites with expansive soils, we over-excavate and replace with compacted engineered fill or a lean concrete mud mat on engineer instruction. We take subgrade seriously — it's the foundation of the foundation.

4

Construction

Site Prep, Forming, Pour & Finish

Our own crew handles every step — excavation, subgrade prep, formwork, rebar placement, concrete pour, and surface finishing. We keep the worksite clean, communicate progress daily, and flag any unexpected conditions before they become problems.

5

Completion

Final Walkthrough & Written Warranty

We complete a final walkthrough with you, document the finished work with photos, confirm all inspections are signed off, and provide your written workmanship warranty before we consider the job done.

Yes — we handle both residential and commercial new concrete construction across the Bay Area. Residential work includes foundations, retaining walls, slabs, stairs, and ADA ramps. Commercial work includes large floor slabs, tilt-up panels, site concrete, curbs, and structural foundations. We’re comfortable working directly with homeowners or as a subcontractor to a general contractor.

Yes. We have in-house concrete and shotcrete pumping capability, which allows us to serve hillside lots, urban sites with restricted access, and any location where direct chute delivery isn’t practical. This is a significant advantage on many Bay Area new construction projects where site access is challenging.

Absolutely. We regularly work as a concrete subcontractor on larger new construction projects, coordinating directly with general contractors, structural engineers, and inspectors. We’re comfortable working from engineered drawings, meeting inspection milestones, and operating within the scheduling demands of a larger project team.
